Who Needs a Breather?
So Much for a Day Off...
I wasn’t going to do anything creative yesterday. That was the plan. No writing, no worldbuilding, no outlines, no character work. Just... nothing. Maybe kill a bunch of albinaurics for a day. Hell I might have even rearranged my sock drawer. You know, important stuff. Or I might have just stared at the ceiling and let my brain defragment for once. I’ve got nearly 600,000 words across various projects, I’m about to start Kobold Book 3, which will be another 200K at minimum, and sometimes you need to let the engine cool. That was the idea, anyway.
And as they say, plans never survive encounters with the enemy. I instead spent the entire day building a 100-song soundtrack for a Daggerheart character. Last week we had our first meeting, session zero, for our Daggerheart group. The GM is a pathfinder veteran and he wants to lift the Fall of Plaguestone as our run. So as a group we sat around the table and we ate greasy pizza, it’s a staple for gamers everywhere. Sans Mountain Dew because it was 6PM and you shouldn’t have caffeine that late if you want to sleep and you’re not mainlining caffeine in your veins.
So we knew we were starting as caravan guards. And my initial thought was a minotaur, satyr cause Daggerheart has goat people instead of cow people, who had Kaido’s spikey metal club and was constantly lost. So Ryoga Hibiki, female version, with Kaido’s spikey club… Why would I have picked Moss Head? Psh, same anime, please, that’s not how this writer rolls.
Now… as of writing this our first real session is tomorrow June 23rd. And I need to explain how Risa Stern went from Lost Minotaur with a club to Risa Stern the Hyena chef of a caravan.
Now, she was SUPPOSED to be a low effort. I already explained once how I view the entire “we’re all narrators here” thing as not my cup of tea. Look, I write novels as a hobby. I can’t call it a profession without being paid, it’s right there in the writer bylaws. I don’t make them up, I just abuse them. Point is, I’m not exactly a stranger to narrative structure. So when a tabletop system tells me to “be a storyteller” it’s a little like being told to “try breathing” by your yoga instructor. I’m aware. I do this.
But then the GM said there were guns.
Guns. In a fantasy setting. That’s steampunk, and steampunk is my jam, anyone who read my Way of Kings vs Mistborn should know that I read Mistborn in a quarter of the time… maybe half the time, of Way of Kings. The best Final Fantasy games? FF4 and FF6. Because they had steampunk. Airships. Mechs. The sexy dragoon... *clears throat* Anyway. The moment “guns” entered the equation, my brain went from zero to obsessed in about six seconds. The minotaur with the club was dead on arrival.
Enter Risa Stern. Chef. Hyena. Problem.
And yes, I said hyena, because Daggerheart doesn’t have dog people. Let me say that again for the people in the back. This system has cats. It has monkeys. Turtles. Satyr, remember no cow people. Robots. Fungi. The boring races. Dragon people. The no we’re not Tieflings. Whatever their “not aasimar” clone is. But dog people? Gnolls? Nah. Can’t have that. The creators have a corgi. A CORGI. And you can’t give me a dog-coded ancestry? I gotta reskin the cat person as a mixed ancestry just to get my hyena girl on the table? Come on. Dis the gnolls like that. See if I care. And there was careful consideration between Risa the Hyena and Risa the Honeybadger… both have different energy.
Why should I care? It’s not like I’m writing a whole paragraph about it... Clearly I care. Damnit I like to play monsters. You let me play a damn goblin, can’t do gnolls? The gnollish council of public relations will hear about this.
So Risa started as nothing. Low effort for a system I’ve been openly skeptical about. And then I made the mistake of giving her a backstory. Just a little one. A hyena who went out to scavenge food and came back to find that her people had died from the plague and she ran. She became a caravan cook who doesn’t talk about her lost people. A chef who fights with a meat tenderizer in one hand, a blunderbuss with a bayonet in the other, and a machete on her hip for when things get close. And once I had that image, this hyena woman cracking a bandit across the skull with a rolling pin/club/meat tenderizer/frying pan while her blunderbuss is still smoking... that was it. The day off was over.
I started building her soundtrack and honestly this lasted until about 10 pm. Playing it song after song, writing it down, comparing how it went from piece to piece. Obsessive? Maybe? Perfectionist? Only on pointless things. It’s like Vibe Coding… only even less useful.
For those who don’t know, soundtracks are part of my character development process. They sit alongside worldbuilding and character backgrounds as a standard tool. I’ve done this for years across multiple projects. The playlist isn’t just “songs I like,” it’s a narrative. It tells the character’s story in music.
Risa’s story is six acts long.
She opens with the caravan. Tavern folk, Celtic energy, Lindsey Stirling, Bards of Ethernia, Leahy. This is Risa hiding the pain and emptiness with energy and false joy. Joy. Dancing. Mugs up, boots down. Loud and warm and full of people. Because, fake it until you make it, right?
Then the cookfire. This section is almost entirely Joe Hisaishi, because Howl’s Moving Castle is just a good emotional core and I didn’t get a vote. Sophie’s Castle, Merry-Go-Round of Life, The Flower Garden. There’s Yasunori Mitsuda in there, The Treasure Which Cannot Be Stolen, Parn’s Theme from Record of Lodoss War for warm friendship, an ActRaiser OC ReMix, you know the one, for building something good, and a Soul Blazer remix for quiet late-night hours by the fire. This is the daily life section. The peaceful part.
And then The Walk.
The Walk is the biggest section of the playlist by a wide margin, and that tells you everything you need to know about who Risa is underneath the apron and the arsenal. It starts ancient and mystical, Bo Hansson’s Tom Bombadil, Corridors of Time from Chrono Trigger. Moves into walking alone, Man’s Road from The Last Unicorn, Terra’s wandering theme from FF6. And then it just... collapses into grief.
Twenty-three tracks of grief. For a character I wasn’t going to bother with.
Loreena McKennitt for memory. Murray Gold’s “Boe” for the elder who taught her. “Carrying You” from Castle in the Sky twice, because once wasn’t enough. “Dark Aria” from Solo Leveling for the pup-keeper and the cubs she came back to and who were dead. And that’s the thing about building a soundtrack before you’ve fully fleshed out a character. The music fills in gaps your conscious brain hasn’t gotten to yet. I didn’t sit down and decide “Risa lost children she was responsible for.” I put Dark Aria in the grief section and my brain went, “Oh. That’s what that’s about.” Frieren’s “Time Flows Ever Onward” is in there too, because if you’ve seen Frieren, you know exactly why that track belongs in a story about someone who lost people and keeps walking.
The grief section runs from Cannibal Fantasy, Ravenous soundtrack, sad strings through Sarah McLachlan’s Possession through Gamma Ray’s Lake of Tears through Blackmore’s Night’s Ghost of a Rose all the way to Claire’s version of Fly Me To The Moon. Hans Zimmer’s Rain. The Slayers OST. A Breath of Fire remix. It’s not a section, it’s a novel’s worth of emotional real estate crammed into a playlist for a character who started as a minotaur with a club.
After the grief comes The Darkness, where Risa’s threats live. The Slayers tracks here are doing heavy lifting for tone, Rizzo’s menace and Joyrock’s discordant chaos from the Slayers villain catalog fit perfectly for the kind of danger that follows a wandering chef through bad territory.
Then Rising. Resolve. SKALD doing “Riders on the Storm,” Alina Gingertail, the Skyrim theme, Rimsky-Korsakov’s Procession of the Nobles, Utena’s “Rose is Rain.” And Bo Dallas’s WWE theme for slow-motion clarity, because my music taste has never been anything if not all over the place. This is where Risa picks herself up. This is where the blunderbuss gets loaded.
Combat is where it gets fun. There’s a whole Defiant subsection that’s ten tracks of “too stubborn to fall” featuring an artist called Romeo and Sabaton’s “The Unkillable Soldier.” Then comes Hype. The notes for every track in this section just say “The pan comes out.” You Say Run from MHA. One Piece’s “The Very Very Very Strongest.” Frieren the Slayer. Escanor Theme. Vegeta’s Limit Breaker. All for the moment when a hyena chef reaches for the meat tenderizer and someone’s day gets significantly worse.
There’s an Epic subsection for big moments, Boss tracks for climactic fights, One-Winged Angel, because some things are sacred, Duel tracks from Utena for one-on-one confrontations... and then there’s Predator. Two tracks. “When the hyena comes out.” Bite Marks from League of Legends and Clean Cut Killer an homage to Levi Ackerman cause he is nothing but a cool efficient killer. Cold efficiency. This isn’t the tenderizer. This isn’t the blunderbuss. This is the teeth.
The final act is called “Who She Is.” Journey of the Sorcerer, the Hitchhiker’s Guide theme, Dan Thiessen tracks that hit like eulogies, Blood and Honor. And the closing brings it back to Howl’s Moving Castle with Promise of the World, then The Last Unicorn, and finishes on the Rankin/Bass Hobbit version of The Greatest Adventure. Because Risa’s story isn’t done. It’s barely started.
One hundred tracks. Six acts over six and a half hours. An entire character arc from joy through loss through defiance through identity. For a system I’ve been skeptical about, built for a character who started as a throwaway, on a day I explicitly set aside for doing nothing.
Creativity doesn’t have an off switch. It’s not a faucet you can turn. It’s a leak in the ceiling. You can put a bucket under it or you can let it ruin the floor, but it’s going to drip regardless.
We play tomorrow. Risa Stern has a hundred songs, a backstory that made me tear up when the grief section came together, a meat tenderizer, a blunderbuss with a bayonet, a machete, and a set of teeth for when none of that is personal enough.
She started as a minotaur with a club. She’s a hyena who cooks and when this campaign is finished she’s joining Angel and the others in Kobold. Mura and his burrowfolk friend could use another chef to help feed the inhabitants of their city.
So much for a day off... And I'd love to share you the list in its glory, but that's not something a text blog can do. Well... I guess you'll just have to listen to it and decide if I wasted a day. And sadly I know some of these songs might not be there when you listen, youtube takes them down, or in some cases like Nazgul "When the Wolves Return to the Forest" youtube only has the album uploaded and not the individual tracks. But I do because I'm an obsessive compulsive individual and I used to spend paychecks buying songs and cds for specifically this reason... and I was a teenager in highschool and we had these new fangled gadgets called CD Burners that made making character cds so easy... but that my loyal audience is a rant for another day.
Incorrigibly yours,
J.E. Flint
